The legendary 150-year-old company was founded in Springfield, Massachusetts, by Horace Smith and D.B. Wesson.

 

Both men came from longstanding New England families, and they embarked on their partnership in 1852 with the shared dream to develop a high-quality handgun for the most demanding of users. With the creation of a firearm able to shoot self-contained cartridges without requiring loose gunpowder, balls, and a primer, the two New Englanders forged a brand name that would forever be associated with the conquest of the wild western territories of the new world by truly passionate individualists.

In the early 1890s Smith & Wesson introduced a series of small .22 handguns devoted to the self-defensive needs of the modern independent woman. With a “Lady Smith” tucked away in her handbag, the Mrs. Smith & Wesson of the early 1900s had at her disposal the seven rounds of a cartridge generally considered suitable for one's personal protection in those days. In 1935, the most famous name in gunmaking created a cultural myth with the first gun of its Magnum line, and in 1956 unveiled the famous .44 .

In 1965, the world's first stainless steel revolver was produced - launching the era of stainless steel firearms. Today's 500 Magnum embodies the passion of Smith & Wesson as represented by over a century of relentless exploration and pure protective instincts.
